Visiting Seward

Seward, Alaska, is one of the most picturesque towns in the Last Frontier, nestled on the edge of Resurrection Bay and surrounded by towering mountains and glaciers. Whether you’re seeking wildlife, stunning landscapes, or a mix of outdoor adventure and local charm, Seward has something to offer.

Seward is one of our favorite getaways! The last time we got down there was for my husband’s birthday in April. Although still chilly out, we had the best time and we plan on making this his annual birthday trip. So in this two part post, I will be covering all things Seward. Let the adventure begin!

Getting to Seward: Road, Rail, or Cruise?

By Road: Seward is approximately 125 miles south of Anchorage, making it easily accessible by car. The drive along the Seward Highway is nothing short of breathtaking, with sweeping views of the Turnagain Arm, wildlife sightings, and dramatic coastal scenery. It’s a popular route for those seeking a scenic road trip to explore the beauty of the Kenai Peninsula. Be sure to stop at some of the roadside viewpoints to take in the sights and snap a few photos along the way.

By Train: For a more leisurely and memorable way to reach Seward, consider taking the Alaska Railroad’s "Coastal Classic" route. The train ride from Anchorage to Seward offers unparalleled views of the rugged coastline, towering mountains, and glaciers. It’s an iconic Alaskan experience that provides ample opportunities for sightseeing and wildlife spotting from the comfort of your seat. You can even opt for a luxury dome car to make the experience extra special.

By Cruise: If you're arriving via cruise ship, Seward is a common stop on many Alaskan itineraries, as it’s home to the state’s busiest cruise terminal. You’ll dock right in town, offering easy access to all of Seward’s attractions, from boat tours and fishing charters to hiking trails and quaint local shops. Many cruise visitors opt for an extended stay in Seward to fully explore the area before heading onward to their next destination.
